Jacob deGrom signs $185 million deal with Texas Rangers for 5 years

On Friday, the Texas Rangers and Jacob deGrom came to terms on a five-year contract worth $185 million.

The deal also includes a conditional sixth-year option and a full no-trade clause.

deGrom, the winner of two National League Cy Young awards, was drafted by the Mets in the ninth round of the 2010 draft, and has spent his entire career thus far with New York.

Chris Young, the Rangers Executive Vice President and General Manager, spoke of the deal in a press release, saying

“We are thrilled that Jacob deGrom has decided to become a Texas Ranger. MLB player Jacob has been a standout Major League pitcher for a number of seasons, and he provides us with a strong performer at the top of our rotation.

To boost our starting pitching, one of our main objectives this offseason is to add one of the best. I welcome the entire deGrom family, including Jacob and his wife Stacey, to the Rangers on behalf of the entire organization.”

Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox appear unlikely to enter the bidding for the four top free agent starters, including deGrom. Instead, they are likely looking to the next tier of available starters.
